Jean Michael Seri: Why did Chelsea and Arsenal miss out? Fulham’s new signing analysed | Football | Sport

Why have Fulham signed him?

Jean Michael Seri is Fulham’s first signing of the summer transfer window. They aim to add some real quality to their squad, as they attempt to survive in their first season back in the Premier League, after a four year absence. Speaking after his arrival, Seri said: “It was a long day yesterday, so it was great to get the move finalised. Now I’m ready to get started. I am delighted to be here, it’s a new adventure that starts for me.”

How much have Fulham paid?

The Cottagers are understood to have paid a fee in the region of £18 million. Seri has signed on a four-year deal, keeping him at Craven Cottage until 2022. There is also an option to extend this by a further twelve months.

What position does he play?

Seri is a hard-tackling central defensive midfielder, who is usually the anchor of the team. However, he also has a keen eye for the pass, and is very composed on the ball. The last two campaigns have seen him top the Ligue 1 charts for passes played, and passes completed. He will now provide competition for some of Fulham’s play-off winning heroes, such as Kevin McDonald and Stefan Johansen.

How has he fared previously?

Seri signed from French team Nice, where he had previously helped them to a top-three position in the 2016/17 season. Before that, he spent some time in the Portuguese Primera Liga, at both giants Porto, and Pacos de Ferreira. Seri also made his international debut for the Ivory Coast in 2015, and has since gone on to make 18 appearances for the national team.

What has been said about him?

Fulham vice-chairman Tony Khan revealed his delight at their newest signing, saying: “Jean Michael arrives with Premier League qualities, as well as great promise for the future.”

What happened to Chelsea and Arsenal’s interest in him?

Seri had previously been linked with London giants Chelsea and Arsenal, before eventually signing for Fulham. It was understood that Arsenal had previously been in talks with his agent, but opted to pursue Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira instead; a signing they made on Tuesday. Chelsea have also been linked with the Ivorian, but it seems he has chosen to sign for the other west London Premier league club. The Blues have struggled to get any business done in recent months with there still plenty of uncertainty over Antonio Conte’s future.
