Man Utd news: Why Alexis Sanchez has struggled under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United | Football | Sport

That’s the verdict of former United striker Michael Owen, who says Henrikh Mkhitaryan encountered the same problem under the Portuguese gaffer.

Alexis Sanchez joined United from Premier League rivals Arsenal in January in a swap deal which saw Mkhitaryan head in the opposite direction.

But he’s so far failed to justify the immense hype the move generated – as well as the mega £500,000-a-week wages he’s earning in Manchester.

Sanchez was once again unable to make his mark when United beat Watford on Sunday and he ends the Premier League season with two goals and three assists in 12 appearances for them.

Owen has now offered his take on why Sanchez has not managed to replicate his best form since leaving Arsenal for United.

And he’s opted against placing the blame on the Chile international, who played the full 90 minutes against Watford.

“It’s horses for courses,” said Owen, when asked on BT Sport Score why Sanchez’s move hasn’t worked out for him.

“How many players like that don’t shine under Jose Mourinho? How many defenders that are probably not as good as everyone thinks they are do shine under Jose Mourinho?

“It’s the way he plays. It’s the way he sets up. You know anyone can play centre-half for Man United when you’ve got a brilliant sitting midfielder in [Nemanja] Matic, the best keeper in the world [David De Gea] behind you, full-backs that don’t really go forwards too much. You’re protected so much.

“But up the other end you know it’s very difficult to shine. You look at the great players that have come in. Everybody thought Mkhitaryan [would do well], everybody thought Sanchez [would do well], there’s so many players that fail to shine.”

Sanchez will be eager to prove his doubters wrong when United take on Chelsea in next weekend’s FA Cup final.

The 29-year-old is likely to start on the left-hand side of United’s attack at Wembley.

And Mourinho revealed on Sunday that Anthony Martial, who’s vied with Sanchez for a starting spot, is suffering with a knee injury ahead of the Chelsea clash.

“[Martial is] injured,” said Mourinho. “He was injured, he was injured Friday training session, yesterday couldn’t train.

“He had treatment in the morning at the training round and he stayed away. I don’t know.

“I know that Romelu [Lukaku] will be back for Tuesday because he’s in the last week [of rehabilitation] and we have to see but Anthony I have no more.”
