Next Arsenal manager: Gunners have made contact with Patrick Vieira in last 24 hours | Football | Sport

Vieira was one of the early frontrunners for the Arsenal job following Arsene Wenger’s decision to leave the club last month.

However, the New York City boss has seen his odds drift in recent weeks.

Another former Gunners captain Mikel Arteta is the current favourite with the bookies to replace Wenger.

But Sky Sports now claim Arsenal have made contact with Vieira in the last 24 hours.

The report states Vieira is “disappointed” and feels the contact is just a “token gesture” from Arsenal.

Arsenal’s all-time leading goalscorer Thierry Henry, who is currently the assistant manager of the Belgium national team, has not been contacted.

Vieira became manager of Major League Soccer outfit New York City in 2016.

The 41-year-old won nine major honours in a glittering nine-year spell at Arsenal between 1996 and 2005.

Vieira was the captain of the Invincibles side that went the entire 2003/04 league campaign unbeaten.

His appointment would arguably receive more support from Arsenal supporters than Arteta would.

Arteta is yet to manage, having spent the last two seasons as an assistant at Manchester City since retiring in 2016.
