Rafael Nadal makes bold statement ahead of the Monte Carlo Masters | Tennis | Sport

Nadal, who helped Spain to a Davis Cup quarter-final victory over Germany earlier this month, is marking his return to the ATP Tour at the Monte Conte Masters this week.

The Spaniard, who has amassed an incredible 53 clay court titles in his career, will be coming back to the blue riband event as a 10-time champion.

With just 100 points separating him and Roger Federer at the top of the world rankings, Nadal needs to win it in order to cement his place at the summit.

Nadal has excelled on the red dirt during his career, lifting the French Open 10 times.

With preparations beginning for Roland Garros next month, he knows he has to continue to dominate while he has the chance.

When asked what are the positives and negatives about playing on clay, Nadal said: “For me, I don’t see negative things.

“I love to play all the events of the year, but of course the clay court season is a little bit different.

“I have unbelievable memories of every tournament and I know I don’t want to play these events forever so I enjoy every chance I have.

“I do enjoy the possibility of keep playing.”

Nadal has been handed a bye for the second round at the Monte Carlo Masters as he is one of the top seeds.
