Russia vs US LIVE updates: Putin on war phone line as submarines move ‘in missile range’ | World | News

President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Syria and Russia on Twitter, suggesting an attack on Syria “could be very soon or not so soon at all!”

The president’s tweet read: “Never said when an attack on Syria would take place. Could be very soon or not so soon at all!

“In any event, the United States, under my Administration, has done a great job of ridding the region of ISIS. Where is our “Thank you America?”

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has warned the West against air strikes, saying they risk upsetting international peace and security.

Theresa May is to chair an emergency Cabinet meeting this afternoon to discuss the latest crisis in Syria amid signs she is preparing to join US-led air strikes against the regime of President Bashar Assad.

The Prime Minister summoned ministers to No 10 after saying “all the indications” were that the regime was responsible for an alleged chemical attack on its own people last weekend.

Downing Street officials said they would not be drawn on claims Mrs May was preparing to authorise UK forces to strike against Assad with first seeking vote in Parliament.

In a development on Thursday morning, Russian media reported Syrian government forces had seized control of the city at the centre of the escalating tensions, Douma, where the attack is said to have taken place.

Kremlin-backed news agency Tass reported a Moscow official saying that Russian military police will be deployed to the city to maintain law and order.

12pm update: Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn condemned Donald Trump’s rhetoric on Syria, saying: “More bombing, more killing, more war will not save life.”

He added: “I think the whole world should be alarmed at that sort of instant reaction – sending stuff out on social media to make policy.

“What happened in Syria is disgraceful. Any use of chemical weapons by anybody against anybody else is clearly illegal as well as immoral and wrong.”

The self-confessed pacifist also said there has to be a “political solution” in Syria instead of war, adding: “More bombing, more killing, more war will not save life. It will just take more lives and spawn the war elsewhere.”
