Serena Williams watched Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal before Wimbledon win | Tennis | Sport

Williams booked her place in the third round with another straight-sets win and she looks to be picking up serious form heading into the second week.

The American, seeded No 25, is now one of the clear favourites to win the title after four of the top six seeds suffered shock early exits.

Questions were raised over how long it would take Williams to return to her former heights after she took a year out of the game to give birth to her first child.

But Williams looks the real deal – and she even watched two of the greatest players of all time ahead of her match with Tomova.

“I actually was watching a video incidentally just this morning,” she said,

“I was watching Rafa playing. He had the long shorts. That’s all I remember.

“I don’t remember anything else. Maybe it was a long match.

“I don’t remember that at all.

“Was I there? I don’t even know if I was there that year. Yeah, I have a really bad memory, though.”

Williams also reacted to the number of surprise exits which have stunned the women’s draw.

“I don’t know. I didn’t know it was half. I know just a couple, but I didn’t know it was half of the top 10,” she added.

“It’s hard. Everyone’s playing hard. No one’s giving you anything for free. Today I didn’t get anything for free. In my first round, I didn’t get anything for free.

“I feel like people are going out there and coming out and playing their hardest.”
